NORTH BATTLEFORD - The City of North Battleford is reminding residents to follow some safety tips during the current significant fluctuations in temperature.

With approximately 30 degree swings in weather temperatures over the past week, the City’s Director of Protective Services is issuing a reminder to residents to help them stay safe.

“While the community isn’t necessarily situated on a floodplain, the quick thaw of a large amount of snow can still leave homeowners susceptible to basement flooding,” said Chief Lindsay Holm in the news release. “We recommend that residents make an effort to clear snow and ice surrounding any basement windows to avoid any seepage into homes. This is also a good time for property owners to ensure sump pumps are in working order.”

Holm noted that with the cycle of thawing and freezing this week, residents should ensure external furnace vents have not been covered. If they are able, Holm recommends that residents clear roofs of any snow accumulation. Alternatively, residents should enter and exit external doors with caution to ensure there is not a significant overhang of snow.

At city council's meeting on Monday night, the City’s Director of Operations, Stewart Schafer, advised the public that road crews are prepared to begin fixing potholes, which are now becoming visible during this recent thaw.

Schafer reminded motorists that puddles should be approached carefully, as they can actually be potholes that are deeper than they appear. People are asked to report any potholes that require patching on the City’s website.

With temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, Chief Holm advises motorists to proceed with caution due to the icy conditions of city streets.
