Regina police charge eight with forcible confinement

During the search warrant execution there was an accidental discharge of a police officer’s firearm, which struck another police officer.

REGINA — Eight people have been charged with forcible confinement after an incident that saw a man assaulted and a police officer injured by a firearm.

On Thursday, April 25, at approximately 1:30 p.m., police were dispatched to the area of 4th Avenue and Robinson Street, after a report that an injured male was being chased by a suspect male. The suspect male was unsuccessful in apprehending the injured male and fled the scene.

Police arrived and located the injured male who had been assaulted. The male was transported to hospital and received treatment for his injuries and was later released.

Investigation into this assault led to a search warrant being executed in the 1000 block of Retallack Street on Friday, April 26. During the search warrant execution, there was an accidental discharge of a firearm that led to the previously reported injury of a police officer. Eight persons were taken into custody. Investigation determined that all eight persons would be charged for the forcible confinement and assault on the male.

Three men and five women are jointly charged with forcible confinement and assault with a weapon. One of the men is additionally charged with aggravated assault.

The eight accused were remanded and made their first appearance on these charges in Provincial Court Monday, April 29.

During this search warrant execution there was an accidental discharge of a police officer’s firearm, which struck another police officer. This officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. No members of the public were injured during this incident. The Saskatchewan Serious incident Response Team (SIRT), an independent, civilian-led unit responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police officers in Saskatchewan, is monitoring this investigation.
