Blast from the Past: UCHS curlers advanced to district playdowns in 1974

50 years ago

Former Macklin resident and member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Cpt. Charles H. Lock, was assigned to a UN mission as a military observer in Palestine.

The Scott, Revenue and surrounding area’s telephone system was being converted to dial service, signifying the end of manual switching. At the same time DDD – Direct Distance Dialing – was being introduced, enabling residents of Scott to direct dial friends and businesses thousands of miles away. Demonstrations of “How to Use Your New Dial Telephone” would be taking place at the Scott town hall.

20 years ago

Following the bone-chilling temperatures of the previous week, the biggest blizzard in a decade rolled through the province, Jan. 30, dumping between 15 and 20 centimetres of snow.

Landswest School Division board approved a program for recycling fluorescent lamps and mercury vapour bulbs.

After years of planning, the Unity Sports Wall of Fame committee announced their first call for nominations for the inaugural inductees onto the wall. Categories were team, individual and builder, with builders having to have contributed 25 years or more to sport in Unity.

Unity Curling Club members discovered a problem just in time to save their ice after an issue with the artificial ice plant forced the town to turn off the power to the plant for two days. Heaters inside the curling rink remained on and melted the top of the ice. Members said another half day would have meant the ruination of the ice.
