Lemur baby boy at Saskatoon Zoo soon to receive a name.

SASKATOON — Zoo Operations Manager Jeff Mitchell confirms their new baby lemur, born to mother Lucy and dad Ringo, is a boy. His name will be selected in the next few weeks by a winner chosen at the Zoo Gala.

Mitchell tells Â鶹ÊÓƵ.ca, “The baby is taking every step (literally and figuratively) that we expect. He is exploring on his own and mom has been ever vigilant.”

While Lucy spends all hours with her new offspring, lemur dads don’t do much with the baby directly; what they do is watch mom and baby and make sure there is no danger, and warn if there is.

Mitchell adds, “Lucy has been an amazing mother. She is attentive, caring, and deals with the energy of a two-month-old lemur amazingly.”

Saskatoon’s Zoo Operations Manager says, “The staff always get energized when a new baby arrives. We are always cautious when a new baby arrives, but when they do great like this young one is doing it makes us all realize that we are making a difference and helping with the conservation and education of these species.”

Visitors can come and see this new baby in addition to numerous new attractions created the past few years such as the prairie dogs, the butterfly house, small mammal house, bobcats and of course, the zebras.

Mitchell notes that they will be working on some new areas for the animals, and new furniture for them. As for other expected zoo babies or hopefuls at the Saskatoon Zoo, Mitchell replies, “Nothing to report at the moment.”

The Saskatoon Zoo is located in the Forestry Farm Park and it’s a place for young and old to experience a sense of childhood wonder. You can read all about what this attraction offers by visiting their website at
