Saskatoon fire and police work together battling fire at flour mill

Extreme cold weather created challenges.

SASKATOON – Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) and Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) worked together to bring a fire at flour mill on 33rd Street East under control Friday.

A drone from SPS was used to assess the roof areas of the flour mill to determine if the flames had spread. Video from the drone confirmed that the fire was contained to the lower floors.

SFD had responded to the fire at 9:33 a.m. after getting reports that the fourth floor was on fire. They send two engines, a ladder truck, a rescue truck, and the Battalion Chief.

Due to the extreme cold, a second alarm was called at 10:16 a.m. and two more engines, a ladder truck, and Command 9 were dispatched.

The fire had reached the six floor and SFD used the ladder truck to flow water onto the fire for about 30 minutes.

The fire is now under control and SFD remains on site to ensure the fire is completely extinguished. The weather continues to be a challenge and crews are frequently rotating to maintain safety of the incident and personnel.
