Kevin Queau – who was arrested earlier this week in B. C. for a murder in Manitoba in 2007 – was known to frequent Saskatchewan. If you recognize him or have relevant information about any unsolved crimes, police want to hear from you.
Queau, 42, was arrested on Jan. 27 in Vancouver and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Crystal Saunders. He would have been about 25 at the time of her murder.
Saunders was last seen by an on-duty Winnipeg Police Service officer late in the evening on April 18, 2007, getting into a vehicle at the corner of Sargent Avenue and Sherbrook Street in Winnipeg.
The next morning, around 9 a.m., her body was found in a marshy area by an off-duty RCMP officer who was checking his trapline. The officer understood the importance of containing the scene and preserving evidence and did so until investigators arrived on scene, said Manitoba RCMP.
DNA was found on Saunder's remains, and after advancements in technology around 2014, the DNA evidence got a hit on the National DNA Databank, which was linked to Queau.
Over the next several years, investigating officers obtained evidence they needed to arrest and charge Queau.
"I can speak first-hand to the dedication and the perseverance of those involved in this investigation, and I am extremely proud of our investigators and our team in resolving this case," said Superintendent Rob Lasson, Officer in Charge of Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services.
“This is about Crystal. She was well-liked and had many friends, but she also struggled. Crystal was a vulnerable person, and someone took advantage of that. We now have that person in custody."
Queau is originally from Winnipeg, where he attended both secondary and post-secondary school.
He also frequented Saskatchewan, Alberta, B. C., and Ontario so the long-term investigation spanned western Canada and Ontario.
"We will be in further contact with other RCMP divisions and police agencies across Canada in order to determine if there are any additional linkages or connections to other unsolved crimes," said Superintendent Lasson.
RCMP ask if anyone has additional information on this matter or any other matters related to Kevin Queau, to call the RCMP tip line at 1-888-673-3316.
