YORKTON – SaskEnergy and BGC, formerly known as Boys and Girls Club, are teaming up to give back to the local community during SaskEnergy’s Share the Warmth Days.
The event, the fourth of six across the province, includes games, crafts, snacks, hot chocolate and the distribution of essential items to youth. It marks the 30th anniversary of the Share the Warmth program.
“The Share the Warmth Days were created to emphasize the pivotal role played by our community organizations, such as BGC Yorkton, whose work profoundly affects lives daily,” said Allix Schweitzer, SaskEnergy’s Supervisor of Community Engagement.
“This incredible organization offers a safe haven where children and youth can explore new opportunities, build confidence and develop the essential skills that will guide them through life," added Schweitzer.
BGC Yorkton is one of 106 organizations receiving grant support this year, and one of five in Yorkton.
“BGC Yorkton is extremely grateful for the support received through the Share the Warmth Grant. Funds received have enabled us to provide over 100 community members with warm winter accessories to weather the frigid prairie winter,” said Lorraine Oranchuk, CEO of BGC Yorkton.
“We have seen an increase in need this winter from both our Club families and the community at large. We are thankful to be able to connect children, youth and families with the items they need most," added Oranchuk.
Other Share the Warmth projects throughout the province will provide services to those in need, including lessons on knitting and cooking nutritious meals, providing transportation services, and supplying winter boots and essential winter gear for children.
To mark the program’s 30th anniversary, SaskEnergy invested $100,000 in grants to charitable organizations this year, doubling last year’s total. Since 2012, SaskEnergy has provided over half a million dollars and has supported more than 500 community organizations throughout the province through Share the Warmth grants.
