SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Police Service apprehended a suspect that allegedly pulled the fire alarm in a structure in the 200 block of Avenue K Â鶹ÊÓƵ.
The fire alarm was activated at 3:19 a.m. on Saturday and the alarm company informed the Saskatoon Fire Department, which dispatched three fire engines and a ladder truck.
The first arriving crew reported a four-storey building with no signs or indication of fire from the exterior and they made entry to check the building.
Fire crews checked and searched all the floors for any sign of the fire. They located the fire alarm that was pulled in the second-floor hallway.
It was later known that the incident was a false alarm and a person had intentionally pulled the fire alarm pull station.
The person was located and SPS handled the person's misuse of the fire alarm system, which is an offense. The person may be charged with tampering with vital and life-saving systems.
Fire crews, meanwhile, reset the fire alarm to ensure residents had their alert system ready to warn them in case of a real emergency.
In a separate incident, the SPS is asking for any information on an attempted fire involving a garage in the 1300 block of Avenue C North. The public can call SPS at 306.975.8300.
The SFD received a call of an extinguished fire at 10:08 a.m. on Saturday and dispatched a fire engine to assess the scene.
The arriving fire crew confirmed the fire was very small and had already been extinguished. They believed the incident happened early hours of Saturday.
A fire investigator was also dispatched to the scene as evidence was present of the fire being suspicious.
The investigator determined an attempt had been made to light the garage on fire but its exterior cladding is non-combustible.
The stucco exterior did not support fire growth and there was no other combustible material in its path to burn.
Once the lit molotov cocktail, which was made using a container and flammable liquid, hit the exterior of the garage, the fire went out. Damage is $100 due to soot staining.
