Saskatoon – $700K lost in four-unit housing fire

The fire was extinguished at 8:48 a.m.

SASKATOON — An estimated $700,000 in damages to property was lost when a four-unit building caught fire in the 200-block Camponi Place early Tuesday morning.

The estimate was based on the initial investigation conducted by the fire investigator, who was also at the scene to perform a cause and origin examination.

The Saskatoon Fire Department will provide an update once more information is available based on the ongoing investigation by the fire investigator.

The SFD received multiple 911 calls at around 1:28 a.m. reporting the fire in the housing area located in the Fairhaven neighbourhood.

Three engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene. Fire crews, upon arriving, observed a large fire engulfing two of the units.

The fire crew began attacking the fire and requested dispatch to send two more engines and an additional ladder truck as the fire reached the second alarm. The term multiple-alarm is used in fires to categorize the seriousness of the incident which means additional resources are needed to contain the blaze.

Fire crews also searched the interior of the unaffected units to make sure all occupants were evacuated and the fire did not spread further. No injuries were reported.

The fire was successfully contained to the building’s initial two units, and fire crews monitored hot spots before declaring the fire extinguished at 8:48 a.m.
