SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department has issued a public advisory urging caution in and around the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Saskatchewan River during the summer season.

As we delve deeper into the warmer months, the SFD advises individuals to exercise care when engaging in recreational activities on the river. One of the key recommendations is to thoroughly assess the weather conditions, equipment and water state before embarking on any water sports or recreational endeavours on the Saskatchewan River.

Before venturing out, it is crucial to monitor the weather forecast and take note of any river advisories. Please consult with the Water Security Agency for river-related updates to stay informed about changing water currents.

Also, please look over your watercraft to make sure it is prepared for safe usage, plan your route, and scout for potential obstacles or hazards, including shallow areas and sandbars.

Respecting the regulations governing watercraft operation on the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Saskatchewan River is vital. Be aware that operating watercraft is only permitted in designated areas and requires proof of competency. Familiarize yourself with boating regulations and adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide when launching a pleasure craft or engaging in boating activities on the river.

Watercraft operators must have a lifejacket or personal flotation device on board for each present, regardless of whether the craft is human-powered or motorized. Additionally, river users should uphold proper river etiquette and demonstrate consideration for others on the waterway.

Maintaining a safe speed at all times while operating your watercraft is crucial. Please keep a respectful distance from other river users, refrain from using a craft under the influence of drugs or alcohol, make sure your vessel is equipped with suitable markers and lighting, responsibly launch fuel, and start and load your craft to protect the environment.

The SFD would also like to remind residents that swimming within city limits in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Saskatchewan River is strictly prohibited under Bylaw No. 4433. However, wading or walking through the water is permitted unless otherwise indicated, provided protective footwear is worn along the river's shore or sandbars to avoid injuries from sharp rocks or other hazards.

It is important to note that the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Saskatchewan River features a weir designed to modify water flow and discharge along the river. Residents must maintain a safe distance when viewing this structure, as it generates a powerful backwash capable of trapping objects and individuals. The weir should never be approached and only observed from a safe distance.

If someone is distressed in the river, the following water rescue tips should be followed: Immediately call 911 to report the incident, providing details about the person, time and situation.
