Disturbance leads to CEW use by Saskatoon police

SASKATOON -- Saskatoon police arrested a 28-year-old male following a disturbance at a business establishment in Cumberland Avenue.

Officers were dispatched at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday to a business establishment in the 1200 block of Cumberland Avenue following a report of a male assaulting another male.

When police arrived at the scene, they observed a suspect matching the description in a nearby alley. The officer who was first on the scene approached the male suspect and informed him that he was under arrest.

The male suspect then became combative and assaulted the officer, who was forced to use a conducted energy weapon. The CEW was successfuly deployed and the male suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Medavie Health Services attended to check on the male suspect, who checked out fine as well as the officer. Neither needed any medical assistance.

The suspect has been taken into custody and charges of common assault, assaulting a police officer, and breach of probation are pending.

The CEW deployment will be reviewed in accordance with SPS policy.
