The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 45 calls from Sept. 8 to 15, some of which included: four 911 Act calls, one false alarm, one assault, one assault with a weapon, one Child Welfare Act call, two thefts, one theft of a vehicle, 14 traffic offences, eight other provincial calls, one Mental Health Act call, three mischiefs, one missing person, one uttering threats, one Coroners Act call, one flight from police, one Fire Prevention Act call, and three frauds.
Abandoned vehicle
On Sept. 8, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of an abandoned vehicle near the junction of Highway 9 and 229. Police attended and towed the vehicle, which was unregistered and obstructing the roadway.
Broken curfew
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a missing person complaint on Sept. 8 involving a youth not making it home before their curfew. Police located the youth at a friend’s house.
Costly cigarettes
The Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan stopped a vehicle on Highway 5 by Canora on Sept. 9 and found the driver to be in possession of illegal cigarettes. The driver was charged under the Saskatchewan Tobacco Tax Act and issued a ticket with a fine amount of over $1,420.
Not a police problem
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were contacted and asked why the power was out in the RM of Good Lake on Sept. 11. If you want to report a power outage or have a power outage- related question, please contact SaskPower at 310-2220 or 1-888-355-5589.
Structure fire
On Sept. 11, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a structure fire in Sturgis. The Sturgis Fire Department attended and extinguished the fire that had originated in the basement. The cause of the fire is not suspicious.
Not stopping
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP attempted to stop a speeding grey Volkswagen Golf on Highway 9 south of Canora on Sept. 11. The vehicle did not stop and fled from police at a high rate of speed. A young male wearing sunglasses and a white hat was observed driving the Volkswagen. The same Volkswagen Golf failed to stop for the Yorkton RCMP earlier in the day. Police continue to investigate.
Suspended driver
On Sept. 12, a member of the Canora RCMP stopped a grey Hyundai for speeding. The driver was found to be a suspended driver. The driver was warned for speeding and was issued a ticket for driving while suspended.
Random 911 call
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Sept. 14 to a complaint of a 911 hang-up in the RM of Buchanan. Police attended to a rural land location only to find the house the phone number was registered to had been torn down the previous year. Unintended calls to 911 can be caused by a short in the phone line due to moisture, inclement weather, or other issues.
Stolen truck
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a truck being stolen from Sturgis on Sept. 14. The truck was recovered the same day outside of Yorkton. Family feud
On Sept. 14, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called to assist with a complaint involving a young male striking his brother over the head with an object. Police attended and assisted the family with mediating the incident.
