CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 125 calls from June 26 to July 10, some of which included:
- five 911 Act calls,
- one abandoned vehicle,
- three animal calls,
- five assaults,
- two assaults with a weapon,
- two breaches of peace,
- two break and enters,
- five bylaw offences,
- one criminal harassment,
- two Coroners Act calls,
- one Child Welfare Act call,
- four disturbing the peace,
- three failures to comply with conditions
- one false alarm,
- one fraud,
- one harassing communications,
- one impaired operation of a motor vehicle,
- five Mental Health Act calls,
- four mischiefs,
- four other provincial calls,
- one roadside suspension,
- one sextortion,
- four suspicious persons,
- one theft,
- 55 traffic offenses,
- one traffic collision,
- one Trespass Act call,
- one uttering threats,
- two wellbeing checks and
- two prisoners.
Phantom break-in?
On June 30, a woman called the Canora/Sturgis RCMP reporting that someone had broken into her house and was hiding under a blanket in the basement. Police searched the home and determined no one had broken into to the residence.
Leaf blower dispute
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on July 1 to a neighbour dispute in Canora. The caller reported his neighbour for excessive use of his leaf blower, which resulted in a heated argument between both parties. Police mediated the dispute and both parties were separated.
Effects of excess drinking
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called to a disturbance in the Canora area on July 2. The caller reported a woman in the residence had too much to drink and was acting crazy. Police attended and separated both parties for the night.
Not seeing clearly
On July 2, an intoxicated man called 911 reporting that he could see a man in his home carrying a briefcase. Police attended and determined that no man was in the residence.
Not the way to use a bat
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report on July 3 that a man had threatened another man with a bat following a road rage incident in Preeceville. Police continue to investigate.
Sibling rivalry gone too far
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of a fight in progress in Canora on July 5. Police went to the residence and determined an argument had occurred between a brother and sister who were both intoxicated. The brother took a can of bear mace from the sister, then sprayed in her in the face with it. The brother was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon while prohibited.
Bathroom graffiti
On July 6, Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated damage done to the bathroom at Lady Lake Regional Park. An unknown person went into the ladies bathroom and carved graffiti onto bathroom walls.
Drunk driving while partially clothed
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on July 6 to a report that a woman was driving impaired and had struck other vehicles in the Good Spirit Lake area. Police patrolled and located the vehicle driving in the middle of the road on Highway 229. Police initiated a traffic stop.
As police officers approached the vehicle they observed the femal driver was trying to crawl into the back seat of the vehicle and that she had no pants on. The vehicle was also damaged and was missing a mirror. The woman had slurred speech, blood shot eyes, a strong odour of liquor on her breath, and was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
Multiple open alcohol containers were found inside the vehicle. The woman provided two breath samples of 240mg% which is three times the legal limit. She was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired, operation of a motor vehicle while over 80mg%, having open beverage alcohol in a motor vehicle, and driving without valid vehicle registration. The vehicle was seized and impounded for 60 days and the woman's drivers’ licence was suspended.
911 is no joke
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a 911 hang-up call in Canora from an unregistered cellphone on July 7. The caller reported to have killed a cat, then hung up. Police investigated and determined children were responsible for a prank call to 911 and that no animals were harmed.
Theft from abandoned home
On July 9, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report of a break and enter to an abandoned home in the RM of Clayton. Two jackets were reported to have been stolen. Police continue to investigate.
