Laurel Buck worked as a social worker for many years before making the move into the jewellery business. But she鈥檇 always been interested in jewellery, so when the opportunity came up to purchase Estevan鈥檚 A&A Jewellery in September 2008, she and her father decided to go for it. It was a good choice as the store has met with great success; in fact, Estevan Mercury readers voted it Best Jewellery Store in the city in our reader poll.

Buck and her father Vern Buck have deep roots in the community and working in the store is a wonderful way for them to connect with Estevan locals on a daily basis, helping them pick out pieces that are likely to become family heirlooms and be passed down from generation to generation. 鈥淲e do see generations of family come here, where the father bought an engagement ring here and their children do so as well,鈥 Buck explains.

The jewellery store specializes in ready-made as well as custom-made pieces that are created by a goldsmith offsite. 鈥淲e also do quite a lot of remounting where people bring their mother鈥檚 wedding rings and have them melted down and made into a pendant, for instance,鈥 Buck says.

Along with supporting non-profit organizations by donating jewellery pieces, A&A Jewellery has an engagement ring program where customers can come in after hours and shop in private. There is also a 鈥淢y Dream Ring鈥 card that fianc茅s-to-be can complete so that their loved one gifts them their ideal piece of jewellery, and a rewards program where regular customers receive 10 per cent off each subsequent purchase.

A&A Jewellery鈥檚 15,000-square-foot space also stocks an array of garden decor as well as giftware such as everyday gifts, baby gifts and picture frames.

Aside from serving her community, Buck admits she loves 鈥渓ooking at all of the sparkly things everyday.鈥 One of her favourite items in the store? A 150-facet Canadian Maple Leaf diamond, marketed to commemorate Canada鈥檚 150th birthday, which sparkles almost three times as much as most diamonds which have 58 facets.
