Steve Laycock remains unbeaten through first two days at SaskTel Tankard

Steve Laycock is off to a perfect start at the SaskTel Tankard men’s provincial curling championship, improving to 4-0 on Wednesday night.

KINDERSLEY -- It’s been all systems go for Swift Current’s Steve Laycock through the first two days of the SaskTel Tankard provincial men’s curling championship in Kindersley.

Laycock and his rink of third Shaun Meachem, second Chris Haichert and lead Brayden Grindheim improved to 4-0 with another pair of victories during round robin action on Wednesday.

The former Tankard champion has been getting things done with all sorts of offence, too -- each of Laycock’s wins have seen him score nine or more points, including both on Day 2.

Laycock got things started with a 9-5 win over Langenberg’s Charley Thomas, scoring four of the final two ends in the process. It was more of the same against Saskatoon’s Jason Jacobson in the evening draw, with a three-spot in the seventh end proving to be the difference in a 9-6 victory.

Saskatoon’s Ryan Kleiter, third Josh Mattern, second Matthew Hall and lead Trevor Johnston are right behind Laycock at 3-1 after splitting their two games Wednesday, falling 5-4 to Saskatoon’s Dustin Kalthoff before rebounding with an 8-4 win over Thomas.

Other scores from the afternoon draw saw Jacobson defeat Martensville’s Logan Ede 8-3 and Saskatoon’s Brad Moser down Martensville’s Dylan Derksen 11-4.

The other evening scores saw Ede defeat Moser 8-6 and Derksen take a 10-8 win over Regina’s Kelly Knapp.

Teams are back on the ice at 4 p.m., with Kleiter vs. Ede, Kalthoff vs. Moser, Knapp vs. Thomas, Laycock vs. Derksen.
