MOOSE JAW -- It was a good day for the Central Cyclones badminton team at the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Central District Athletic Association championships this past weekend.
Five members of the team finished in the top two in three divisions and as a result will advance to regionals as the road to provincials continues.
Zen Quimio repeated as champion in the boys division, while the team of Tara Nguyen and Micah Salido-Porter were the gold medalists in mixed doubles and Gabriel Calub and Austin Smith landed second in boys doubles. Exhause Isingoma and Mitiya Benson also had a solid weekend and were bronze medalists in mixed doubles.
Cornerstone Christian School had three familiar faces book their regional berths, as multiple time regional competitor Kiana Hrechka won gold in the girls singles class and fellow repeat regional competitors Drew Biette and Tanner Behrns were tops in boys doubles.
Vanier’s Gwen Baluyet earned the second regional berth in girls singles, while Gravelbourg’s Ariana Bell was third.
Avonlea’s Hudson took second in boys singles and Mossbank’s Carter Hawkins won bronze.
Girls doubles saw Avery Krauss and Geneva Brown from Rouleau take top spot, while Mossbank’s Kaydance Ray and Lindy Jolly took the second berth. Tia LeCaine and Katherine Robichaud finished third.
Avonlea’s Chase Callaghan and Ryan Duncon were third in boys doubles.
Layla Rotheisler and Manny Pagan from Gravelbourg finished second in mixed doubles and will also advance to regionals.
The regional playdown will take place on Saturday, May 3 in Maple Creek, with the top finishers there advancing to provincials in Estevan on May 10.
