SASKATCHEWAN - Update: – Saskatchewan RCMP say they are continuing to respond to weather-related collisions and incidents in southwest Saskatchewan due snowy and icy road conditions and high winds.

As of 4:38 p.m., both eastbound lanes of Highway 1 east of Webb are blocked by a semi. Police are responding. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

The semis blocking the road on Highway 1 between Rush Lake and Chaplin and Highway 11 near Kenaston have been cleared. Motorists are asked to continue to use caution on the roadways and to check conditions before traveling.

RCMP recommendations

Before travelling, check the weather and road conditions along your route. If poor weather or road conditions exist or are forecasted, consider delaying travel if possible. If travel is necessary, stay on roads that have recently received road maintenance. Travellers can access information on road conditions and track which roads have been plowed, salted, and/or sanded within the last two hours at hotline.gov.sk.ca/map (English only).

If you have to stop on a highway for any reason, please pull over to the right shoulder if it’s possible and safe. Don’t block intersections.

If you are stranded or stopped roadside, Saskatchewan RCMP urge you do the following:

Always stay with your vehicle.

  • Stay warm. Periodically turn your vehicle on, but be mindful to conserve your fuel and battery.
  • Make sure your tailpipe remains clear of ice and snow, or carbon monoxide could potentially seep into your vehicle.
  • Periodically lower your window slightly on the side of your vehicle that is downwind, allowing for fresh air to enter the vehicle.

Original post: Areas around Moose Jaw and extending west to the border along Highway 1 are posing problems for drivers.

Highway 2 from Moose Jaw to Tuxford is seeing slush, drifting snow and ice as well as reduced visibility and the Highway Hotline does not recommend travel. Similar conditions mean Highway 301 to Buffalo Pound Park is not recommended for travel. Neither is Highway 363 leading out of Moose Jaw, where there are snow drifts, drifting snow and ice, as well as reduced visibility.

Highway 1 from Mortlanch nearly to Waldeck is also not recommended for travel by the Highway Hotline, with swirling, drifting and loose snow plus icy conditions are making travel dangerous.

Highway 19 from the Number One to Hodgeville is similarly affected, as well as part of Highway 363 east and west of Hodgeville.

Be sure to check the before venturing out.
