FORT QU'APPELLE - The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) have been notified after a male went into medical distress while in custody

On Oct. 23 at approximately 3:15 p.m., Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP received a report of a breach of peace on Boundary Avenue in Fort Qu’Appelle.

Officers responded and located a male, who was displaying what appeared to officers to be a minor injury. Officers observed the male was exhibiting signs of intoxication and for his safety, he was arrested for a breach of peace and taken into custody to be released when it was safe to do so.

The male was monitored by cell guards throughout the night.

On Oct. 24 at approximately 7 a.m., a police officer attempted to wake the male to assess him for release. The officer determined the male was experiencing a medical event and EMS was called. The male was transported to the hospital.

Later on Oct. 24, the Fort Qu’Appelle detachment was notified the male was in serious condition in the hospital.

As required by The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan RCMP notified SIRT.

SIRT will investigate the Saskatchewan RCMP’s interaction with the injured person and the circumstances of his injuries.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s General Investigation Section will also  conduct a separate investigation into whether any injury led to the male’s current medical state, and if any criminality contributed to it.

The Saskatchewan RCMP said they are disclosing this as part of their ongoing commitment to transparency.

Any inquiries regarding this matter can be directed to SIRT.
