REGINA - The City of Regina says green cart materials will continue to be processed at the composting site at the Waste Management Centre, despite having parted ways with EverGen, with which it was going to build a permanent composting facility.

A Facebook post indicated Monday morning that composting will be operated by City of Regina staff within the coming weeks while the city procures a new provider.

“We remain committed to building a permanent processing facility that will extend the life of the landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce a usable product from waste,” said the city in its post.

At City Hall Wednesday, Jan. 15, it was confirmed the city and EverGen had agreed to mutually terminate their contract to build a permanent composting facility.

The parting of ways with EverGen Infrastructure came not long into a deal struck for EverGen to process all of the organic waste from the City of Regina’s Food and Yard Waste Program introduced in 2023. Things went off the rails when EverGen couldn’t get approval for its proposed permanent processing site in the RM of Edenwold.

According to Director of Water, Waste and Environment Carolyn Kalim, the city will share further information about a new processor and timelines, once a public procurement process has been completed. It was also confirmed EverGen will be allowed to take part in that procurement process.
