MOOSE JAW — Liberal Party candidate Tabitha Mukamusoni is bringing her experience in community leadership and media to the federal election race as one of five candidates in Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan this month.

Personal background

Mukamusoni has lived in Saskatchewan since 2016, where she is based in Gravelbourg with her family. Originally from Burundi, she worked as a journalist and later moved to Canada, where she continues her work in community media. Mukamusoni has four children and has been active in local organizations aimed at promoting education and family well-being.

Her career began as a correspondent for Voice of America, specifically Voice of America in East Africa, until forced to seek refuge in 2015.

She currently serves as the director of both Radio CFRG-FM, a French-language radio station operating at 93.1 FM in the Gravelbourg area, and the Association communautaire fransaskoise de Gravelbourg (ACFG), where she has been involved in training broadcasters and helping newcomers adapt to rural life.

According to her official website, her recent work is focused on building inclusive spaces and increasing access to community resources, particularly in smaller towns and francophone communities.

Platform highlights

Mukamusoni could not be reached for an interview ahead of this week’s Moose Jaw Express press deadline.

According to her official Liberal Party website, Mukamusoni is emphasizing policies aimed at boosting rural economies and supporting middle-class families. Her platform includes investments in job creation, small business development, and infrastructure tailored to rural Saskatchewan. She supports building 500,000 homes per year across Canada to address housing needs, providing financial assistance to low-income seniors, delivering tax cuts for 22 million Canadians, and strengthening Canada’s armed forces.

Mukamusoni has also expressed support for expanding health care access and affordable childcare options, aligning with national Liberal Party policies. She said these measures are essential to keeping families in smaller communities and ensuring that they thrive. She backs the national Liberal plan for $10-a-day childcare, calling it a crucial step toward improving affordability and supporting working parents.

She has called for action on climate change that considers the specific needs of agricultural communities, including support for farmers transitioning to more sustainable practices. Her platform includes enhancing programs like AgriStability with an investment of $3 to $6 million, implementing protections against tariffs such as those introduced by the Trump administration, and ending the federal consumer carbon tax.

Mukamusoni is running alongside Conservative incumbent Fraser Tolmie, Britt Baumann (NDP), Chey Craik (PPC), and Mike Gardiner (Green). She is expected to speak at the All Candidates Forum hosted by the Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce at the Grant Hall Hotel from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.
