Preluding possible Olympic careers, Assiniboia and area athletes medal wins shine

On the diamonds, on the track and in the pool, local residents say they may have witnessed the start of budding Olympic careers in local athletes.

ASSINIBOIA--Assiniboia fans had plenty to cheer for this summer with hometown athletes scoring a number of success stories.

On the diamonds, Jenika Stevenson was part of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ-Central Venom U17 softball team who competed in an 18-team Softball Sask. provincial championship, winning a silver medal.

It was softball silver for Lily Kwasnicki from Assiniboia, as she was one of the younger members of Team Â鶹ÊÓƵ West softball, at age 12, who captured a silver medal at Saskatchewan Summer Games that took place in Lloydminster. Kareeen Kwasnicki served as the softball team’s manager.

The Assiniboia Aces 13U11 Team competed in Tier 2 Baseball Sask. provincial championship in an 8-team round robin event that took place in Martensville July 26-28. They won their way all the was to a provincial gold medal, defeating Sask. Five by a score of 10-3. It has been a stellar year for this young team as they also captured the league championship against the Swift Current 57s on July 22.

The Assiniboia Aces senior men’s baseball team captured both the Dunning League title as well as the senior men’s AA provincial championship, in the Tier 3 division.

With the Olympics consuming news talk for its duration, hometown fans excitedly talked of their local athletes who saw success stories at Saskatchewan Summer Games held in Lloydminster July 21-27, wondering if they will watch the rising stars of the next Olympic champions.

If you weren’t familiar with the name Radu Bumbac before, the 15-year-old swimmer who is part of the Assiniboia Aquarians swim club earned four bronze medals at the 2024 Saskatchewan Summer Games July 21-27. All medals were earned as part of relay/team events but the local swim star also competed in every other individual male swimming event at the next games.

Coronach’s Klay Elder won a silver medal at SSG in 700gm javelin, earning also a sixth place in discus and 5 kg hammer.

Jessy Hitchcock from Pambrun was part of multi disciplines in the athletics competition, competing in track and field events. He earned 7th place in triple jump and just finishing out of the medals, but a very admirable fourth place in male pentathlon, Jessy’s competition in 100m, high jump, 5 kg shot put, long jump and 800m race earned him 2,519 points.

Returning home with a silver medal from SSG was Rogan Schlamp of Mossbank, who was part of the male volleyball team. Rogan plays power position and these games exceeded his goals of making new friends and just getting to experience the games. Team Â鶹ÊÓƵ West had a great round robin earning second in their pool and after advancing from semi finals, the lost to gold medal winners. Regina to close out the games.
