WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 86 calls for service during the period of April 8 to 14, resulting in a total of eight charges. Of the charges, one was laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, six under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act (AGRA). The lone criminal charge resulted from an individual who failed to attend court as required to do so.
In the very early morning hours of April 13th, officers responded to different calls involving heavily intoxicated individuals. One call, occurring just after midnight, involved an intoxicated individual who was reportedly trying to enter a house mistakenly thinking it was his. Officers located the individual as he was attempting to enter another house a short distance away and took him into custody. The individual was lodged in cells until he was sober and released without charge.
The other call involved a 911 hang up originating from a hotel room. Both WPS officers as well as EMS personnel responded to the 911 call and found a very intoxicated adult. EMS treated the individual and transported her to the Weyburn General Hospital for further care.
On Friday, a resident out for a morning walk reported being confronted by two aggressive dogs that were on the loose. Officers attended and spoke to the owner of the dogs who was unaware of a broken section of the fence that allowed the dogs to escape. No charges resulted from this incident, but that is not always the case. The Weyburn Police Service encourages all dog owners to check their yard and fence to ensure their dogs cannot escape.
Weyburn police received a call reporting an adult male on Saturday evening who appeared to be drinking alcohol in public and occasionally going to his vehicle. Officers attended and found the male sitting on a grassy area of an apartment lot. The male was intoxicated and had a can of open alcohol. Officers warned the male about the consequences of having care and control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and issued a ticket to the male for having open alcohol in a public place.
Very early Sunday morning, officers responded to a residence in which the homeowner called to report that a very intoxicated young male just walked in and passed out on their couch. Officers attended and took the young male into custody. The young male was lodged in cells until his identity was confirmed and a family member was contacted. It was discovered that the young male was not familiar with the city and believed he was entering his father’s house, which was one block over from the home he entered.
A traffic stop conducted early Wednesday evening resulted in two individuals being arrested for having outstanding warrants originating from the Regina Police Service. As requested by the agency holding the warrants, one of the individuals was released with a new court date and the other was held in custody to appear in court.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
