WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 88 calls for service during the period of April 22 to 28, resulting in a total of 25 charges. Of the charges, 10 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 14 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act (CDSA). Of the criminal charges, two were in relation to individuals who either failed to comply with a condition of their release or to attend court as required to do so.
On Thursday evening, the Weyburn Police Service conducted another High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) traffic project, resulting in one driver being charged with impaired driving and two other drivers receiving a three-day suspension of their driver’s license as well as having their vehicle impounded for three days. Over 300 vehicles were checked during the HVE project, which is supported by SGI.
In the very early morning hours of Friday, an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle and conducted a traffic stop resulting in an adult male facing several weapons offences including possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The male was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance. The male was arrested, charged accordingly, and released on conditions with an upcoming court date.
On Tuesday afternoon, officers responded to a reported two-vehicle collision involving an SUV and a semi-trailer unit at the intersection of Highway 39 and Third Street. The Weyburn Fire Department and EMS personnel also responded to the collision. Fortunately, no significant injuries resulted and damage to the vehicles was minimal. The collision resulted as the SUV made a lane change into the same lane as the semi just as the traffic light changed to amber. The SUV came to a stop but the semi could not stop in time and collided into the back of the SUV.
Also on Tuesday, the Weyburn Police were advised of a theft involving an individual who removed an item from its box in a store and then paid for other items but did not pay for the item removed from the box. This matter is under further investigation.
Officers investigated the report of vandalism to a vehicle on Friday. An adult male was identified and charged with mischief to property.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
