WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 76 calls for service during the period of February 19 through February 25, resulting in a total of 34 charges. Of the charges, nine were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada and 25 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA).
Similar to the previous week, traffic related infractions resulted in the majority of charges laid during the week. Of the 25 charges laid under the TSA, 13 were related to speed, six were related to driver’s license or vehicle registration, four were related to stop signs or traffic signals, and two were related to using cell phones while driving.
On Thursday, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by an individual known to have a suspended driver’s license. The driver failed to stop and a warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest. During this time, a local business reported that the same male had stolen merchandise from their store just prior to the attempted traffic stop. The store provided video surveillance and his identity was confirmed. A while later, a member of the RCMP located and arrested the suspect on the outstanding warrant. The male now faces charges of theft, driving while suspended, and failing to stop for police.
On Friday morning, police received multiple calls regarding a collision on Highway 39 near the intersection with 16th Street. Both the Weyburn Police Service and the Weyburn Fire Department responded. Visibility was poor at the time of the collision due to heavy fog. No injuries were reported and damage was minor. No charges were laid in relation to this incident.
During the early morning hours of Sunday, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle that was exceeding the speed limit and also drove through a red light. A traffic stop was initiated and the adult male driver displayed indicators of impairment. A roadside screening test was conducted which resulted in a fail. The driver was subsequently charged with impaired driving, failing to comply with a driver’s license restriction, and failing to stop at an intersection displaying a red light.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
