WEYBURN - Repairs to the ice plant for the City of Weyburn’s Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena have been completed, and the plant will be restarted once final safety tests are approved.
With the extended downtime of the refrigeration system, both sheets of ice were lost and were removed by city crews.
Preparations are now underway to reinstall the ice surfaces, and the ice-making process will begin once the floor slabs reach the necessary temperature, a step that is already in progress.
To streamline the process, the City has developed a collaborative plan that brings together city staff, volunteers from the Weyburn Red Wings, and the expertise of Canadian Arena Services, a third-party contractor.
“We are optimistic that the ice-making process can start before the end of this week,” said Andrew Crowe, director of leisure services.
“We appreciate the patience of our user groups and the community as we work diligently to bring facilities back into full operation.”
A more definitive timetable will be shared with user groups and the public later this week as the ice installation progresses.
Meantime, the City and Hockey Weyburn are partnering to host a U9 Outdoor Winter Classic at the Credit Union Spark Centre's outdoor rink this weekend, Dec. 7 and 8.
The tournament will have 16 teams and nearly 190 players in Weyburn for the outdoor hockey action.
