REGINA - Teresa Sandeski was at the Legislature Thursday, trying unsuccessfully to reverse a government decision that removed her husband Fred from a Weyburn care home.
A day earlier, Fred and his belongings were removed from the Weyburn Care Home, where he had been staying, with friends and supporters protesting outside.
Jorgenson said he was in Weyburn that day and called it a "heartbreaking situation." The NDP has said Fred is terminally ill with late-stage COPD, congenital heart failure, epilepsy, blindness, diabetes, and celiac disease.
"The government needs to do better, it needs to help these people, particularly Fred who has honourably served his community for many, many years," said Jorgenson.
But the word from Minister for Seniors and Rural and Remote Health Lori Carr is that Sandeski does not qualify for a long term care bed.
"Mr. Sandeski was in a long-term care facility using a respite care bed," said Carr to reporters.
"He wasn't actually in the long-term care facility as a patient, I'll just clarify that. But an assessment was done to see if he would qualify, it was done through professional assessors with very strict guidelines that they use and he did not qualify."
That explanation did not satisfy Teresa.
"I'm really concerned about the health care system and how they assess a lot of these patients that are falling through the cracks," she said to reporters Thursday morning.
Teresa ultimately did have meetings with Carr later at the legislature. Following the meeting, Teresa spoke to reporters again and made it known she didn't think there was any progress.
"Personally I didn't think it got anywhere," she said of meeting with Carr.
"I felt it was talking to a stone, even though she said that she was hearing me... I felt discouraged, but I'm not giving up."
She said she didn't think her visit to the Legislature was a "waste of time," but "I feel that maybe they should be looking at who they put into office."
As for next steps, she said she plans to "continue with the hours that Home Care can give us." But Teresa says if the is worsening he will be going to the hospital.
"He's failing, you can see."
