Susanna Klatt, the eldest child of Anton and Magdelina Gaab, was born October 21, 1919 on Sec. 21-8-15, W-2. The temperature that day was about -20 degrees Celsius. They told her it was so cold that after she was born, the doctor wrapped her in a blanket, placed her in an apple box and put her in the oven to stay warm. The family lived there for the winter and when she was six months old her father moved the family to the farm that is now known as the Adam Honig farm. In Easter of 1926, she started school at West Weyburn. The only subject she remembers her marks in was Math and that was in the 90's (94%). During Grade 9 and 10 she was missing a lot of school. In the fall she was needed to heard cattle until freeze-up when they could run in the fields. In the Spring Susanna helped with harrowing and planting of the potatoes and garden. In fact, at the age of nine, she was out raking hay in the fields with the men. At school Susanna played a lot of ball against McTaggart School and Prospect School. She was usually shortstop or left field as she had a good "wing" on her. She also took part in field meets, racing and jumping. In the spring of 1934 the family moved back to the place where she was born and she took the last three months of her formal schooling at Tagg School. That fall we moved to 14-7-14 where Jeff Gaab had lived. Susanna's time was spent working with the men in the fields, milking cows, feeding pigs, and calves, and helping in the house. There were a lot of good times. Going to dances or playing ball in the summertime. She remembers the time when they put on a two hour play at Â鶹ÊÓƵ Weyburn School. She also performed at Colgate and Club 13 in Weyburn. She had a wonderful time. In 1939, Susanna met John Klatt and got married on June 18, 1940. They lived at 22-7-14 until the fall of 1940, then rented land from John Kyle. Three of their four children were born there. Janet in September 1941, Marion in February 1943, and Henry in October 1944. Unfortunately Janet passed away in an accident in the spring of 1949. John and Sue purchased the John Kitson farm in the Lomond Municipality in April of 1945 and they and their children took up permanent residence there in April of 1945. Their youngest daughter, Flory, was born there in October 1946. During their years on the farm, John and Sue were actively involved in various activities such as coaching minor ball and driving their children to various sport and school activities. They were both active in their church serving in various capacities. Sue was well known in the community for her quilting bees. In the fall of 1977, John and Sue retired from farming and moved to Weyburn. John passed away in January, 1983. Sue resided at 640 Stavely Crescent until 2008, when she went to her condo on Government Road. She stayed there until she could no longer live alone and then went to Parkway Lodge until her passing. A Service of Remembrance for Susanna was held on Thursday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn with Pastor Martin Olson, officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Honorary pallbearers were all of Susanna's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Curtis Parker was urn bearer. For family and friends so wishing, donations in memory of Susanna may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
