Scotty Lystrup Flaaten passed away peacefully on September 25, 2013 at the age of 90 years. Scotty was predeceased by his mother, Annie (nee Barsness) Flaaten in 1964; father, Nels Flaaten in 1970; brothers, Noel Flaaten in 1998, Harold Flaaten in 2000 and Norvald Flaaten in 2011; sister Bertha (nee Flaaten) Huston in 2006; niece, Audrey (nee Huston) Downs in 1997; nephew, Gary Downs in 2007 and brother-in-law, Thomas Huston in 2007. Scotty was born on December 25, 1922 in Glenwood Minnesota to Nels and Annie Flaaten. Scotty was raised on the homestead southwest of Grassdale and took his schooling at Meadow Brook just west of Grassdale. He ended his formal schooling at the age of 14 to work full time on the farm. He and his brother Noel built all of their own buildings and repaired most of their own equipment. Scotty remained a bachelor and worked his entire life on the farm until his retirement on October 15, 1994, then took up residence at 326-2nd Street in Weyburn. In 2009 he became very ill and moved into the Parkway Lodge in Weyburn. In his spare time Scotty enjoyed collecting both coins and stamps. He faithfully kept up his diaries. He liked to watch hockey and was an avid fan of the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and of course the Weyburn Red Wings. Scotty loved his farm animals especially the dogs and his last remaining chicken, which he brought with him to town in 1994. Scotty was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Along with this brother Noel, he volunteered at the Lutheran Bible Camp in Midale until the time of its closing. Scotty attended church regularly all of his life and was confirmed by Pastor Peter Mohr at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Hill Lutheran Church. He frequently would visit the elderly and shut-ins at Weyburn Special Care Home, Souris Valley, Pioneer Place and the Weyburn General Hospital. Scotty enjoyed travelling and took a memorable trip in 1981 to Norway to visit over 200 relatives at a family reunion in Sogndal, Norway. He travelled on numerous other occasions with brothers and sisters to Glenwood and Lake Crystal, Minnesota to visit family and friends. Scotty was a very sincere and kind gentleman. He was well known for helping his neighbours through all the good and bad years with different farming operations. He was very respectful of others and was always willing to help everyone in any way that he could. Scotty was a very humble man in every way imaginable. Scotty will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Gladys Flaaten; sisters-in-law, Laura Flaaten and Helen Flaaten; nieces and nephews, MaryAnn (Don) McDonald. Roger (Norma) Huston, June (Myron) Fletcher, Norlee (Rosemary) Flaaten, Jeff (MaryAnn) Flaaten, Greg Flaaten as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews and great, great, great nieces and nephews. A Visitation was held on Monday, September 30 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Fletcher Funeral Chapel. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 1 at 2:00 PM from Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Martin Olson and Marjorie McLeod, CLA officiating. Interment took place at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Pallbearers were Jeff Flaaten, Norlee Flaaten, Roger Huston, Don McDonald, Bob Barsness and Delbert Flaten. Donations in memory of Scotty may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
