R.F "Sandy" Sanderson

Sandy was born in Winnipeg, MB, the oldest of four boys to Lorraine and Reg Sanderson. Sandy grew up in Souris, MB, developing a taste for corn roasts with "borrowed" corn and freshly raided apples to eat, or throw. Friends, fun and hockey kept him in Souris until the reality of never playing in the NHL forced a life decision. Having developed a relationship with the law he decided it would be "easier to join them, than beat them!" So began a 25 year career and life with the RCMP. One of his first posts was Lloydminster, SK, and as often happened with shift workers, he met a local nurse named Myrna. He had a nice car and could ride a horse, so before long, he was part of the family. They were married April 1, 1961 and welcomed their children Tracey, Kelly, and Scott. As was the norm at that time, being an RCMP family, meant moving every two to four years. Many life-long friends were made from North Battleford, Cutknife, Prince Albert, Fillmore, Saskatoon, and finally settling in Weyburn, where he retired as a Sergeant. As a young retiree, with a "gift of the gab", he returned to school and earned a certificate in Human Resources. He was employed with the health region and the Weyburn Community College, then made a wonderful decision to be self-employed as a consultant. Dad enjoyed many years as a "head hunter," allowing him and Mom a relaxed lifestyle, the ability to make their own schedule, enjoy vacations, family, fishing, home and the yard. It was then he developed his "love/hate" relationship with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Rain, snow or shine, Mom and Dad enjoyed their season tickets, and the entire family began to "bleed green". Dad particularly enjoyed being a Grandpa. He had one cardinal rule: no fun was allowed without him! Games are always more fun when played competitively, card games must always be played for money and to always remember "one peek is better than two guesses!" Sandy passed away suddenly on August 26 at the Regina General Hospital due to complications following surgery. Sandy was a best friend and husband to Myrna. He was a fun dad, super father-in-law, and wonderful role model. His greatest role was as a grandpa, where he instilled his love of fun, life, laughter, fishing, the Roughriders, and a good storm. Missed by his family: wife Myrna; children: Tracey Rothwell (Warren), Kelly Orban (Randy), and Scott Sanderson (Karla). Grandchildren: Kimberly, Meagan, Kathy and Shawn Rothwell (Tracey and Warren), Jenna, Kelsey and Paul Orban (Kelly and Randy) and Brett and Lauryn Sanderson (Scott and Karla). Mother Lorraine, brothers Bill and Tim and numerous in-laws, "outlaws," nieces, nephews and friends. Private family internment will be held at the RCMP Depot Division Regina. A social gathering to celebrate Sandy's life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 7 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Auditorium, Upper Hall, Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Donations in memory of Sandy may be made to the Saskatchewan Roughrider's supported charity, KidSport, Saskatchewan, www.kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan/. Arrangements were entrusted to RD Family Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Weyburn, 306-848-0333, 1-888-848-0333. Expressions of sympathy to the family may be sent to our website at www.rdfamilymemorialchapel.com. "Our family serving your family".
