Renata Gizela Sliwka

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Renata Gizela Sliwka on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at the age of 74. Renata was born in Chelmno, Poland and immigrated to Canada by herself in 1970 in search of a better life. She eventually settled in Weyburn, where she etched out a life for herself and her family. Renata had a love for cooking and her family cherished her traditional polish cooking which was made from the heart. Renata enjoyed travelling to various places in Canada and the United States and was able to return to Poland on two occasions. She always enjoyed the warmth of the sun and particularly cherished a vacation to Cuba that she took with her daughters. Renata eventually relocated to Yellowknife, NT to be closer to family but unfortunately suffered a stroke shortly after arriving. She eventually settled at Aven Manor in Yellowknife, and despite a decline in health she remained independent and very active. She took great pride in her garden and flowers and looked forward to tending her garden each year after the long northern winters. The family would like to thank Dr. Mansouri and the staff of Avens for all their efforts to make Renata’s last few years pleasant. The care and attention she received will always be remembered by her family, we are truly grateful. We would also like to thank the nurses and doctors at Stanton Territorial Hospital for the wonderful care she received during her recent hospitalizations. She was predeceased by her parents, Witold and Gertrude Orzechowska; and brothers Kazimiez(infant), Stephan Orzechowska and nephew Peter Saugilsky. Renata will be sadly missed by her beloved daughters Lillian Sliwka, Claudia Richea (Nathen) and her treasured grandson Elijah. She will be remembered by her sister Jadwiga Saugilsky (Michael), numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Yellowknife, NT, Tuesday, November 22 at 1pm. Internment of the ashes will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, at a later date. Donations in memory of Renata may be made to Avens - A Community for Seniors, Yellowknife, NT. Arrangements entrusted to McKenna Funeral Home, 5114 Forest Drive, Yellowknife, NT. 867-446-0411.
