Regina "Rachel" Wawro

Regina "Rachel" Wawro passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the age of 98 years. Rachel was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Maria Zimmerman; husband, Walter Wawro, son, Wes Zimmerman; step-son, John Wawro; step-grandson, Alvin Wawro; five brothers and one sister and step-daughter, Ruth Wawro. Rachel was born at Abbey on November 16, 1915, the second oldest child in a family of seven children, to Anthony and Maria. As a young woman she worked at a variety of jobs including the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina. On November 14, 1945 Rachel married Walter Wawro in Fox Valley. After marriage, Rachel turned her energy to helping run the family farm. She raised large numbers of turkeys, chickens and geese. She regularly milked the cows and grew a large garden to feed the family. While living in the Cedoux area she was actively involved in the Cedoux Ladies' Altar Society, and later became involved with the Catholic Women's League in Weyburn. Rachel and Walter farmed together near Cedoux until Walter's passing in July of 1971. She would continue to live on the farm until 1976 when she moved to an apartment in Weyburn. During Rachel's 25 years at Bison Manor, she met and made many new friends. In 2006 Rachel moved into the Weyburn Special Care Home, where she lived for her last eight years. Rachel loved to play bingo, attending sports days, and getting together with family and friends. She was a life-long letter writer and faithfully corresponded with family and friends across many provinces. Rachel held a special place in her heart for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She took great delight in visits from her grandchildren and always had a hug, kiss and a cookie for each of them. Rachel's family would like to thank Dr. Phillip Fong and all of the staff at Weyburn Special Care Home for all of the care and compassion shown to her over the many years that it was her home. Rachel will be lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Janet Zimmerman of Alameda, and family, Bernard (Michelle) Zimmerman, Denise Gelech, Glen (Diane) Zimmerman and their children, Meaghan Zimmerman, Jeremy Hunt, Gregory Zimmerman, Bastian Gelech, Zoe Gelech and great great grandson, Liam Hunt; daughter, Marilyn Williams of Winnipeg, MB and family, Marilyn (Ken) Pankratz and children, Sidney and Hanna, and Goldburn Williams; son, Richard (Celine) Wawro of Cedoux, and family, Derrick Wawro and daughter, Cadence, Alison (Curtis) Folbar and children, Justin and Logan, Trevor (Dayna) Wawro and son, Brendan; step-son, Tony Wawro of Regina, and his family, Colleen (Terry) Hayden, Rodney (Betty) Hodel, Roxanna Hodel and Scott Hodel; step-daughter-in-law, Jean Wawro of Weyburn, and family, Gloria (Barry) Allen, Susan Wawro and Ken Wawro as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
