Peter J. Lacey

Peter J. Lacey of Winnipeg, MB passed away on May 10, 2016. He had been hospitalized with complications from an infection, diabetes, and cancer of the liver. Born in England, Pete came to Saskatchewan in 1957. He attended Weyburn Collegiate Institute (WCI) then achieved a BA (distinction) in mathematics from the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus). Moving to Winnipeg, he worked for computer businesses. He wrote technical articles for computer magazines, as well as becoming a freelance on-line writer and editor, and a community correspondent for the Winnipeg Free Press. He’ll be remembered for his contributions to the history of Manitoba railways. He published two books, The Muskeg Limited and Tramway to the Pointe, and finished a third manuscript just before he died. He was a supporter, volunteer, and director of the Winnipeg Railway Museum. His voluminous research on railways has been donated to the Museum. He was western vice-president of Transport Action Canada. Peter was an outdoorsman and conservationist. He had a cutting sense of humour and a wealth of knowledge. His friends and family will miss his larger-than-life personality. Predeceased by his parents, Dorothy (née Wilcox) and Cyril Lacey, Pete is survived by his brothers Stephen (Dawn) of Yellowknife, NWT and Nigel (Collette) of Calgary, AB, seven nephews and nieces, and their children. A memorial event will be held on July 16 at the Winnipeg Railway Museum. Contact Steve at [email protected] for more information.
