Pauline Kosior

On December 9, 2016 our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Pauline Kosior passed away peacefully at the age of 98 years. Pauline was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Anna Shumey; husband, Walenty Kosior; stepson, Allan Kosior; granddaughter, Katherine Refvik (Gaab); son-in-law, Joseph Gaab; four brothers, Metro, John, Bill and Pete and four sisters, Maggie, Olive, Mary and Katie. Pauline was born to Jack and Anna (Kutcher) Shumey, November 3, 1918 in the Drobot District south of Buchanan, SK. They were a family of five girls, Maggie, Mary, Katie, Olive, Pauline and four boys, Metro, John, Bill and Pete. Pauline attended North Lake School and moved to the Innes area in 1939 to work as a housekeeper on the Kosior farm, where she met her future husband, Bill. On November 27, 1945 Walenty (Bill) Kosior and Pauline Shumey were married and soon became a blended family of two boys and four girls, Allan, Adeline, Dorothy, Laurence, Lorraine and Janice. They farmed in the Innes District until 1969. Pauline was very involved in her community and church and often hosted gatherings at her home. She was an active member of the Innes Ann’s and the Catholic Women’s League. Recently she received an award from the CWL for active membership for 65 years. Pauline worked hard on the farm, tending a large vegetable garden. There was always an abundance of canned fruit and vegetables and home baked bread for the long cold winters they faced. She also tended a beautiful flower garden and raised her children. Pauline had many other talents, she knitted, crocheted, tatted doilies and made many cozy quilts. Gladly some of these talents were passed on to her children. Pauline also enjoyed camping and fishing trips with her family. She often entertained many neighbours and relatives in her home and always had a meal prepared for everyone. A fond memory is of the Watkins man’s buggy coming up the road right at lunch time. Pauline had a knack for preparing a delicious meal in 15 minutes. Her door was always open. Bill and Pauline remained in the Innes area until 1969 at which time they moved to Weyburn. Pauline worked at Mount St. Mary’s as a cook and later managed the lunch counter at the Weyburn Curling Rink. After retirement she always kept busy volunteering with St. Mary’s Altar Society cooking at many banquets, funeral lunches and other church functions. After Bill passed away in 1998 Pauline continued to live in her home and remained there until January of 2015 when she moved into Crocus Villa. The family of Pauline wishes to thank all of the staff for the loving care that was extended to Pauline. Pauline will be loving remembered by her step-daughter, Adeline (Cliff) Corbett of Weyburn, SK; daughter, Dorothy Gaab of Weyburn; son, Laurence (Brenda) Kosior of Weyburn; daughter, Lorraine (Dave) Kerridge of Edmonton, AB and daughter, Janice (Stan) Sobchuk of Regina; 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
