Palmer Borger Solie was born on November 5, 1926 to Olaf and Agnes (Brothen) Solie at the home of his Grandpa and Grandma Brothen’s farm at Lake Alma. Palmer started school at Sandoff in 1932. He then attended Tree Lake School. Palmer could only speak Norwegian when he started school. Palmer, along with his siblings, was very involved in the farm, encountering many hardships during those difficult years, but always willing to help in all chores at the farm. Palmer worked at various jobs besides farming, which included hauling gravel with wagons and horses which was loaded by hand and shovel. Palmer also worked at the salt mine at Gladmar, on road construction at various places, Dairy Producers plant and Silverwood Dairy in Regina. In later years he had pride and joy serving with his backhoe business within the community. On November 22, 1949, Palmer married Eileen Fuhro. They lived at several places in the Lake Alma area until they moved to Weyburn 1997. Although times were not always good for them they remained true to their wedding vows. Eileen’s love for Palmer was shown in all the care she has given him over the years and especially the last few years when she faithfully cared for him. Palmer was quick to express his appreciation for her faithfulness to him. Palmer was a good mechanic and always willing to help whoever needed help and not expecting anything in return. He loved to wheel and deal on vehicles. Palmer was Mayor of Lake Alma for 12 years and was on call day and night. Doing jobs that he was not required to do but out of the goodness of his heart was always there to help. Although Palmer and Eileen had no children of their own they took pleasure in playing with their nieces and nephews, as well as other children. Palmer loved children and enjoyed teasing them to which they responded happily. In later years one of Palmers favorite past times was watching TV programs, such as curling, Saturday night polka dancing and most of all Tribal Trails. Palmer will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A Private Family Graveside Service was held on Friday, May 6, from Saron Cemetery, Lake Alma, with Reverend Martin Olson officiating. Blessed be his memory.
