May Furgason

May Furgason late of Weyburn, passed away at the Weyburn Special Care Home on April 21, 2012, at the age of 79 years. May was predeceased by her parents, Emery and Mabel Herring; husband, Norman Furgason; brother, Floyd Herring; sister, Bertha Furgason; brother-in-law, Dale Furgason; sister-in-law Murna Curtis; and nephew, Martin Furgason. She is survived by her children, Bryan (Gloria) Furgason, Miles (Rhonda) Furgason, and Norma (Waddell) Peterson; grandchildren, Michael (Deandra) and their son Chase Furgason, Devin (Amy) and their children Carter and Hannah Furgason, Jason Furgason, Genell Furgason (Jessie Koller) and son Hunter Koller, Carsey (Tessa) and daughter Gracy Furgason, Kelsie Furgason, Kendrick Furgason, Nakita (Cameron) Peterson and Shanika Peterson; sisters-in-law, Marien Furgason and Marge Herring; brothers-in-law, Clarke Furgason and Stewart (Delores) Furgason; her special aunt, Anne Mead; as well as several nieces and nephews. May was born September 6, 1932 on a farm north of Gull Lake. Born during the dirty thirties, she described her early years on the farm as being tough - waking up early to do chores, walking to school, and then back home for more chores and homework. Although times were tough she developed a life long love for reading and would never forget a book she had read. She managed to get most of her Grade 12 before being hired as a school teacher in a one room school in the village of Verlo. A teaching certificate wasn't required in those days so she taught in Verlo, then Hazlet and then Perry. It was there that she met Norman Furgason, an older brother to two of her students. May and Norman would eventually marry in May of 1952. May started her career as a cook on farms in the Milestone, Froude and Stoughton areas. Then, after Bryan and Miles were born, she cooked at the Town & Country, 385 Motel and Ken's Goldtone restaurants in Weyburn. After Norma was born in 1968 she returned to cooking at Mount St. Mary's and Souris Valley. May took time off work to be with her husband, Norman, until his passing in February of 1974. Now with three children she returned to work, first at Ken's Goldtone, then the 385 Motel and finally Souris Valley as a nurse's aid where she worked until she retired. May remained in her own home even when her health started to decline, even learning to write with her left hand after being unable to grip a pen with her right. In 2009 she decided to move into Bison Manor, and then moved to Weyburn Special Care Home in 2010, residing there until she passed away. The families of May Furgason would like to thank the staff of W.S.C.H. North for the care given to May during her stay. They would also like to thank all the visitors who would bring May new books and magazines so she could catch up on her reading. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Arnold Kozak officiating. Interment took place on her late husband, Norman Furgason's grave at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Donations in memory of May can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the Weyburn Humane Society. Condolences may be left at: www.fletcherfuneralchapel.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn (306) 842-5432
