Mary (nee Terney) Nelson late of Stoughton passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the age of 98 years. Mary was born August 5, 1914 in the Beckevar District to Joseph and Mary Terney. She lived on the farm almost all of her life. In the 1920's the family moved to the Gap View District. Mary achieved her Grade 9 education in the area. Religion was the centre of her upbringing, and family was very important to her. In the 1930's Mary lived for a short time in Ontario. On January 6, 1970 Mary and Olaf "Olie" Nelson were married. Together they made a life in Stoughton and area. Mary was content being a home-maker, she enjoyed gardening, knitting and sewing and loved animals. She also loved time spent with neighbours and friends, they often played cards. Her nieces and nephews were very important to her. Mary was involved with the church and other community activities. She belonged to the Ladies' Homemaker Group and the Handsworth United Church Auxillary in Handsworth, and the Drop-In Centre at Forget and Stoughton. She was a very giving person, and donated to many religious organizations over the years. Mary was a kind hearted and thoughtful person. She was always willing to care for others. She passed away at the Newhope Pioneer Lodge in Stoughton, where she was a resident for ten years. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Olie Nelson; five brothers and two sisters. Mary is survived by one brother-in-law, Bob Nelson, of Winnipeg, MB. She leaves to mourn, and celebrate her life, many nieces, nephews and friends who are like family. A Memorial Service was held Friday, December 28 at 2:00 PM from Stoughton United Church, Stoughton with Reverend Elizabeth Goodson officiating. Interment took place at Gap View Cemetery. All in attendance are considered honourary pallbearers. Donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Newhope Pioneer Lodge, Grace United Church, Stoughton, or a charity of donor's choice.
