Margaret Ashby

Margaret Anne Ashby passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Weyburn Special Care Home. Predeceased by her parents Charles and Margaret Johnston, husband Eric Ashby and a daughter in infancy, Donna Lee Ashby. Margaret was born February 17, 1918 in Weyburn. She was raised on a farm just outside of Weyburn. Margaret lived at home and helped with daily farming tasks. She completed her grade 12 and graduated from Wheatland's School. On November 8, 1943 Margaret married Eric Ashby and they lived in the Weyburn area. Together with her friend, Nellie Teasdale, Margaret worked at the concession booth at the rink for a few years. Following this she took a position as cashier at McLeod's store and stayed for just over 25 years. Margaret and Eric had twins Dave and Dianne and raised them in the Weyburn area. She was very interested in her family and was always present at the events of her children as well as grandchildren. In her free time Margaret enjoyed gardening, knitting, baking, reading and playing cards. Margaret's grandchildren were always blessed with a variety of socks and mitts lovingly made by her. Her kitchen was filled with the aroma of her baking and her freezer was usually overflowing. Margaret loved to travel and was especially fond of Hawaii where she travelled with Eric. She visited Dianne, George, Curtis and Darcelle in Germany touring France, Switzerland, Italy and England. She also regularly visited Dave, Deb and Danny in the Okanagan. She kept active in her community with Legion Women's Auxiliary and the Knox Presbyterian Church. Margaret could be found working two to three times a week at either place, or baking at home for one of their functions. She was also an active member of the Knox Presbyterian Church for over 80 years. Margaret had a positive attitude toward life and believed in living each day to the fullest. She was a very special lady who was liked and respected by all she met. Margaret was a caring, open-minded Mom who always listened to what you had to say. She was generous and helpful, fun loving and had a way of making you feel great with her caring happy nature. All who knew her will miss her. Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her family: son, Dave (Debby) Ashby; daughter, Dianne (George) Chow; grandsons, Curtis (Kaleigh) Chow and Danny Ashby; granddaughter, Darcelle Chow (Tyler Bradley); three great grandsons, Benjamin, Hunter and Emerson as well as many other friends and relatives. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, August 23, at 2:00 pm from Knox Presbyterian Church with Reverend John Ferrier officiating. Interment took place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Donations in memory of Margaret may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. Condolences may be left at: www.fletcherfuneralchapel.com. Arrangements entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, 306-842-5432.
