Lionel was born October 28, 1951, the eldest child of Marcel and Alice VanDeSype. Lionel grew up on the farm 10 miles south-west of Radville. He attended St. Olivier Elementary and Radville Regional High School. Upon leaving high school Lionel worked for Jalbert's Custom Combining crew that fall. Lionel and Bev were married February 6, 1971 at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. Lionel farmed with his father and worked at the Radville Co-op until being transferred to Liberty, on November 1, 1971. They moved back to Radville March 1, 1972 where Lionel was employed with the John Deere dealership. In September 1972, Lionel and Bev purchased the Becker farm as well as continued farming alongside his father. While farming, he also worked various jobs at The Radville Bar, North American Lumber and Petro Canada. In 1977 Lionel purchased a half section of land (ValleyCats) from his father. The family moved into Radville the fall of 1980 where Lionel and Bev still reside at 708 Beckwell Ave. In 1981 he started Lionel's Trenching Ltd. and in 1991 started Lionel's Trucking Ltd. Even though he had other jobs he was always a FARMER at heart! April 1, 2006 Lionel and Bev moved into their new home, which Lionel was very proud of. He continued with the construction of the breezeway and garage, completing them in 2009. He was determined to finish the landscaping of the yard before his passing. As a person, Lionel had an excellent work ethic, liked to go to coffee row and loved to go up to the shop to help and visit with the boys. He liked to play cards with family and friends. As a parent, Lionel was proud of his children and their accomplishments. As a grandfather he was overjoyed with his grandchildren's interests including school, hockey, dance, piano, band or re-building a collector truck with his son, Cary and grandson, Rylan. Words used to describe Lionel by his wife, children (spouses) and grandchildren are; hardworking, brave, sincere, grateful, loving, awesome, strong, peaceful, genuine, gentle, entertaining, confident, funny and honest.
