It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of James Ernest Hartley. After a brave battle with Alzheimers he left us with the same quiet grace with which he lived. He leaves his loving wife of 53 years Milly, their four daughters and their families - Cheryl (Jim) McArthur, Amanda, Christine and Russell; Brenda (David) Galonski and Margaret Ann; Denise (Kevin) MacINNES, Malcolm and Samara; and Diane (Greg) Moffatt, Holden and Lochlan - as well as his sister Doris Todosichuk, brothers Harry and Edwin (Donna) Hartley, brother-in-law Lawrence Bernard, and Milly's siblings Gordon (Dorothy) Sherwood, Bernard (Lesley) Sherwood, Elva (Erwin) Zicker, Audrey Cameron, brother-in-law Larry Billett and sister-in-law Donna Johnston. Jim was born in Ogema, finally settling in Calgary, Alberta where he worked for Parks Canada's Historic Sites branch until his retirement in 1997. He developed a keen sense of community and family oriented service as he moved around the country and served on many committees as well as coaching, golfing, curling and camping with family. A staunch Riders fan, he hated to miss a game. He never stopped learning and had degrees from the College of Agriculture (University of Saskatchewan), Master of Science in Planning (University of BC) as well as an MBA (University of Calgary). He was a PAGG of Job's Daughters International, PM of Perfection Lodge #9 AF and AM, and PGP of the Order of Eastern Star, Grand Chapter of Alberta. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. A celebration of his life was held at Â鶹ÊÓƵwood United Church in Calgary on Tuesday, November 12. Donations in memory of Jim may be made to The H.I.K.E. Fund Canada or the Alzheimer's Society.
