Ivan Melvin Marstead

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ivan Melvin Marstead, late of Weyburn. Ivan passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the age of 86 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Ivor and Inga Mathilda Marstead; an infant brother, Kenneth Marstead; sister, Clara Paul, brothers-in-law, Keith Paul, Douglas McNaughton and Elmer Sagmoen and niece Arla Johnson. Ivan will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Bertha Sagmoen, Alice McNaughton and Ruth (Gerry) Prost as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ivan was born to Ivor and Inga Mathilda on March 2, 1926 at Radville. He grew up north of Radville in the Abbott School district. Ivan and his sister Clara began their formal schooling speaking only Norweigian, making the first two years very difficult. After completing his Grade 8 education he began farming with his dad and continued until the time of his dad's passing. During World War II Ivan was called to service but was needed on the family farm. They lived together on the farm until bad winters forced them into Radville. Even after moving into Radville, Ivan took pride in the farm, growing gardens and his precious lilac bushes. Ivan enjoyed visiting his sisters and their families. He had many happy times with them recalling old times over a good cup of coffee. Ivan had a remarkable memory and also enjoyed a good game of rummy with them. All of his nephews and nieces enjoyed the times they spent with him on the farm, shooting gophers and wandering in the pastures. Ivan remained single all of his life and travelled annually with his dad into North Dakota to visit with family and Calgary with his sister and her family and to take in the Calgary Stampede. He enjoyed reading the Bible and supported his church. In later years, while residing at the Pangman Care Home he enjoyed the visits he received from people of different denominations. Ivan will be sadly missed and always remembered by his sisters and their families as well as many relatives in Norway. There will be a Graveside Service at Laurier Cemetery, Radville at a later date. Donations in memory of Ivan may be made to the Heart & Lung Association of Saskatchewan or to a charity of the donor's choice. Condolences may be left at: www.fletcherfuneralchapel.com. Arrangements entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn.
