Helen Satre

The family would like to announce the passing of Helen Satre on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 after a long courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by Wayne, her husband of 47 years, and three children: Tracy McGillivray and her children Mason and Madison; Mark and fianc茅 Jill Johnston; Eric and his twin sons Jace and Kade and their sister Ashley. She has a surviving sister Eva (Frank Nagy) of Prince George, BC. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Karoly and Ilona Wagner, brother Julius and niece Theresa and her in-laws, Herman and Myrtle Satre. Helen was born in Gyor, Hungary in 1948 and immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1964 at the age of 16. Upon arrival, she was enrolled at St. Michael School knowing no English. Through perseverance she made it to high school. Her father passed away in 1967 and in order to help support her mom, Helen started working at the hospital, first in the kitchen, then as a nurses鈥 aid. She thoroughly enjoyed her nursing career, especially the 11 years that she spent as an operating room technician. Helen retired after 35 years of service. Through her working career, Helen developed friendships that continued until her death. Friendship for her was one of quality, not quantity. She had the amazing ability to read people and sort the genuine ones from those who were superficial. She liked everyone; but she saw different degrees of 鈥榣ike鈥. Helen鈥檚 battle with cancer started 20 years ago. She won many battles but ultimately lost the war. Her caring personality helped other people following a similar journey through their fight by listening to their concerns and offering encouraging words. Her mantra to others came from her oncologist, 鈥淵ou have to take charge of your own body and its healing.鈥 Helen very much lived by this advice. Unfortunately the ugly beast reared its head again and overwhelmed her body鈥檚 ability to fight. Her spirit remained strong! The family is grateful to the staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Center for their knowledge, support and compassion in following this journey with Helen and her family, especially doctors Rayson, Virik, Ahmjad and Zarkovik. Special thanks are extended to Sandra Chartier-Goodman for her encouragement and guidance. A Funeral Service for Helen was held聽 Friday, September 23, at 2:00pm from the Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, with Pastor Laurel Seyfert and Marj McLeod, CLA officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were: Helen鈥檚 nursing friends. Interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, with lunch following at the Zion Lutheran Church. For family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Helen may be made to S.T.A.R.S, 2640 Airport Road, Regina, SK, S4W 1A6聽 or a charity of your choice.
