Helen was born February 20, 1920 in the family farmhouse near Dysart. She was one of nine children born to Dimitru and Ecatarina, immigrants from Romania. Helen often joked that the Vilcu family had their own baseball team. She was a fast runner and after winning a race would receive a free ice cream cone from the Chinese vendor in her town. Helen received a Grade 9 education at a rural school before venturing off to Regina to work as a maid for a doctor's family. She was later encouraged to take a hairdressing course, and borrowed 400 dollars from her brother John to do so. Helen's first hairdressing job was in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She would later move to Toulin, Manitoba and then on to Redvers, where she owned and operated "Helen's Beauty Parlor." Helen married Walton Eddy at Griffin on June 29, 1953 and at the age of 35 began raising a family of five children on the farm. As with most farm wives in those days, the majority of her time was spent having babies, raising children, sewing clothes, growing a garden and supporting her man in the field. Helen was a dedicated, loving wife and mother. Her family's needs always came first. She was an accomplished homemaker in every way. It was never a problem to feed extra friends or family who unexpectedly arrived at her home. Helen was always ready to lend a helping hand. Helen and Walton loved to socialize with their neighbours and family. She was always interested in healthy living and led exercise programs at the Kinsmen Senior Centre in Weyburn. She was a member of the Weyburn Seventh Day Adventist Church and was involved in teaching Adult Sabbath School, deaconess duties and Vacation Bible School. Helen loved the Lord and was committed to her faith. She raised her children to the love the Lord as well. Helen always had kind words of wisdom and she never said a bad word about anyone. She was gentle and humble, qualities everyone admired. Helen was an honourable and classy woman who was loved and respected by all, she will be deeply missed.
