Glen Aksel Rasmussen

Glen Rasmussen聽passed away peacefully on February 14, 2016 at the age of 92,聽at the Weyburn Special Care Home. At his passing, Glen was surrounded by his loving family. Glen was born on March 4, 1923 to his parents, Aksel & Aline Rasmussen at their homestead near Maxstone. Glen was an active child and not the most attentive student as he was too often daydreaming of farming with black horses. He farmed with his father for a time then went his own way. On June 9, 1945 he married Cecile (Kwasnicki) of Scout Lake, SK. They lived in Moose Jaw, where Glen worked as a brakeman for the CPR from 1944-46. In the winter of 46/47 they worked in a logging camp; Glen hauling logs with a team of horses and Cecile as the camp cook. For the next few years they rented farmland near Assiniboia then at Viewfield. In 1958 they were able to purchase farmland near Froude, from George Taylor. Over the years they increased the land base and kept a herd of Hereford cows. The three loves of Glen鈥檚 life were: his wife, farming and politics. He got to spend 70 years married to Cecile and often said he 鈥渃ould not have had a better wife鈥. He enjoyed many years of farming, raising cattle and having riding and driving horses before moving to Weyburn in 2004. His son Dwight, remains on the home farm at Griffin. Glen very much enjoyed his years organizing for Tommy Douglas and the CCF party. He continued being invested in politics by attending political events and even travelling to Toronto to NDP conventions. Glen was active in the Farmers鈥 Union in the 50鈥檚. He served as a director on the CoEnerco board from 1982-84.聽 Glen will be remembered as a hardworking man who had a lot of stamina and determination. He lived out his motto of 鈥渋f it鈥檚 worth doing; it鈥檚 worth doing well鈥. Glen is survived by his wife, Cecile and their seven children: Charlotte (Clarence) Hookenson of Kisbey; Dwight (Kathy) Rasmussen of Griffin; Valerie (George) Larson of Calgary, AB; Katherine Hamilton of Regina; Janet Bedore of Weyburn; Margo (Randy) Jacob of Weyburn; Marnelle Rasmussen of Weyburn; sister Yvonne Dosch of Assiniboia; 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Glen is predeceased by his parents, brothers Maurice, Delbert, Adreen, Elvin, Clay, Roger, Gerry; sisters Violet, Audrey, twin sister Gladys;聽 son-in-law Bob Bedore and great grandson Lawson Bedore and great granddaughter, Sloane Bedore. Funeral service for Glen was held on Feb 19, 2016 at Grace United Church with Rev. Barnabas officiating. Eulogy was given by longtime friend, Ross McMurty and tributes by daughter, Charlotte and grandson, Trent Hamilton. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Cindy Selke, Chris Rasmussen, Cory Smith, Trent Hamilton, Norm Rasmussen and Tyrel Jacob. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn.
