Elizabeth Mary “Betty” Orser

Betty was born on October 18, 1917 at Dauphin, MB to Frank and Elsie Harmsworth and passed away peacefully at Weyburn Special Care Home Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the age of 99 years. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Elsie Harmsworth; daughter, Doris Smith; sons, Johnny, Gordon, Reginald, Leonard and David Hein; husbands, Otto Hein and Wayne Marin; brothers, Denis, Jack, Edwin and Leonard Harmsworth; son-in-law, Robert Erickson; daughter-in-law, Mary Hein; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Betty was raised with four brothers in Manitoba and later at Paswegin, Saskatchewan. She was kind of a tom-boy. Her father worked on the C.N. Railway and this might have inspired Betty’s love of travel. Betty was married to Otto Hein from 1935 to 1962 and then was married to Wayne Marin from 1965 to 1986. On May 18, 1991 she married Ray Orser.  As well as raising five daughters and nine sons, Betty spent a short time working at the Weyburn Review. Over her lifetime she lived in Manitoba, Paswegin, Gladmar, Estevan, Canora and Weyburn. Most recently Betty resided at the Legion Towers in Weyburn and has been living in Weyburn Special Care Home since September 2, 2015. Betty loved butterflies and collected butterfly pins, scarves, wall hangings just to name a few.  She loved a good book and was particularly fond of a good romantic novel. She also enjoyed dancing, especially square dancing, travelling and sewing. She was an avid knitter and made many afghans for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren as well as the great-great grandchildren. Betty also had a passion for fishing and enjoyed many fishing trips with her sons, Denis and George. Betty was an active member of All Saints Anglican Church and was active with the Anglican Church Women.  Special trips for Betty were a journey to England with her sister-in-law, Jean, to visit other family members and a trip to Ottawa with friends from Canadian Mental Health where she was the recipient of an award for the “Improvement of Life” in the community. Her last big “outings” were the baptism of her twin great-great granddaughter and grandson in April and her daughter’s birthday party in July. Betty enjoyed these events enormously and spoke of them often. She loved the staff at the Special Care Home and made many good friends in her time there. She enjoyed and participated in all activities to the end. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Raymond Orser; daughters, Joyce (Ray) Rasmuson of Weyburn,  Elsie Erickson of Radville,  Denise Goodwin of Edmonton, AB and Joan (Larry) Cooper of Regina; sons, George (Ardeth) Hein of Weyburn, Frank (Carol) Hein of Regina, Bob (Bev) Hein of Moose Jaw, and Denis (Anita) Hein of Estevan; step-daughter, Lois Benns of Regina; step-sons, Lorne (Diane) Orser of  Estevan, and Larry Orser of Estevan; sister-in-law, Doreen Bradridge; son-in-law, Adam Smith of Grandview, MB; daughter-in-law, Liz Hein of Midale;  42 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren. A Service of Remembrance was held on Tuesday, November 1, at 2:00 p.m. from All Saints Anglican Church, Weyburn, with the Reverend Brian Woods and the Venerable Wilma Woods officiating.
