Clifford Hume

Clifford Hume was born and raised in Moose Jaw. He was predeceased by his father (1949), Charles Gordon Hume and his mother, Elizabeth Haines (1983), his brothers, William James Hume (1945), Gordon Hume (1985), Russell Hume (1999), and Douglas Hume (2003). He is survived by his sister, Eileen McGhie. Cliff was the youngest son in a family of five sons and a daughter. He told wonderful stories of his childhood - his brothers, his sister and his wonder dog, Foozie. I particularly enjoyed the one about stealing his first car with his brother, Russ, at the age of eight. It was their father's car. He had a way of making his children feel that anything we had done could never be so bad that we could not tell him about it and still be accepted. In 1951, he married Berva Lorraine McLeod. She was a nursing classmate and friend of his sister, Eileen. Together, they offered their three offspring a rich and privileged childhood and made many friends along the way. Cliff enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to cook and entertain. He loved music and technology and he read a lot. He played the harmonica and loved a good sing-a-long. He described himself as a self-educated man. He was a businessman and an independent thinker and taught us all not only to "think outside the box" but that is was okay to examine the box from top, bottom and all four sides. We share wonderful memories of life at the farm in Maxim, our school years in Weyburn, and a home filled with music, friends, good food and excitement. Visiting family and friends led to trips to Vancouver, Toronto, Moose Jaw, Regina and California, at a time when travel was a luxury almost unheard of by our friends at school. He married Yvonne Creek in 1981 and lived in Moose Jaw with Yvonne and her daughter Shelley, until 1986, when he retired to Gabriola Island and re-united with his childhood sweetheart, Vera Wayman, after over 40 years of separation. He was a charming and memorable character. We would like to thank the friends, neighbours and caregivers who helped him to stay in his own home until his sudden death on April 2, 2012, at the age of 85. Special thanks to Maureen and Vicky. We will miss his warm, accepting smile, and his big heart. He leaves behind his daughter Lorri Hume (David Binnie), son Jim Hume (Bonnie) and daughter Tana Hume Plewes (Randy). He leaves five grandchildren, Michael Hovland (Jodi), Melanie Vegt (Jon), Bekkie Khan (Kamil), and Kaisha and Damon Plewes, and six great grandchildren: Peterson and Amelia Vegt, Rees and Joel Hovland, Kai and Levy Khan. He touched the lives of numerous nieces and nephews and extended family on Gabriola of Gail, Michael and Wayne. A celebration of Clifford's life will be held on April 21 at the Rollo Senior Centre, Gabriola Island, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Cliff can go to your charity of choice.
