Alma Schiller

Alma Schiller, late of Weyburn, passed away January 9, 2013, at the age of 87 years. Alma was predeceased by her parents, Christine and Eduard Schiller; sister, Elsie Yeske; brothers: Gottlieb, William, Rudolph and Adolph Schiller; nephews: Gerald, Kenneth, Alfred and Robert Schiller. Alma is survived by her sisters-in-law: Sylvia Melancon, Elgean Schiller and Elsie Schiller; her nieces and nephews as well as her brothers and sisters from the Church of Christ. Alma was born August 2, 1925 in the family home in Beausejour, Manitoba. In September 1937, she was diagnosed with Polio and taken to the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg, where she spent ten years. The first three years of this time she was in bed and then given a wheel chair. The patients and staff were like family, everyone helped each other. When she left the hospital, she rented a room on the second floor of a house in Winnipeg so she could only come and go with help. She supported herself by selling crafts, she made hand painted handkerchiefs, jewelry, crocheting and nylon flowers. In 1959, she moved to the Western Christian College in Weyburn. There she was post mistress, worked in the office as an administrative assistant and also managed a small book store. She retired from there in July, 1977 and has lived in Weyburn for the rest of her life. Being a victim of Polio and spending most of her life in a wheelchair, Alma relied on her great faith in God to help her be determined, positive and courageous. A funeral service for Alma was held on Saturday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m. from the Church of Christ, Weyburn with Lowell Peterson, officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Active Pallbearers were Lawrence Yeske, Garth Oberkirsch, Walter Roelfsema, Ed Roelfsema, Lloyd Jacobs and Lowell Peterson. For family and friends so wishing, donations in memory of Alma may be made to the Church of Christ for Missions, 1115 1st Avenue NE, Weyburn, SK S4H 0N2. Arrangements were entrusted to RD Family Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Weyburn (848-0333 ~ 1-888-848-0333).
