Letter to the editor: Support for Lonechild

I write on behalf of the Saskatchewan Association for the Betterment of

Addictions Services (SABAS) to voice support for FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild.

The Association bases its support on Chief Lonechild's recent actions. By pleading guilty in court to impaired driving, and by his willingness to accept the consequences of what he has described as "a terrible mistake", we believe Chief

Lonechild is acting like a true leader.

Mr. Lonechild told reporters after his court appearance that alcohol is not good for him, nor for many people. He also indicated that he would consult with elders and make sure he is living a healthy life, "one day at a time."

SABAS supports Mr. Lonechild for being open in talking about his problem with alcohol, and for reaching out to other people struggling with addictions. We wish him well in his commitment to live a better life, without alcohol.

The Association also believes Chief Lonechild deserves the support of his colleagues in the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations for the way he has demonstrated leadership in admitting his own addiction to alcohol. SABAS would argue that by shining a light on an issue that affects many people in our society, Mr. Lonechild has shown leadership qualities that touch people in a very personal way. Rather than being critical of Chief Lonechild, the Association urges other members of the leadership of FSIN to support him in what has become a very public journey to recovery from the consequences of his impaired driving charge.

Thank you for your consideration of our position on this matter.

Yours truly,

On Behalf of the Board Of Directors
