Jessica Mees, in the September 28th edition of the Carlyle Observer, indicated "The CES School Community Council does great things for the town and its youth and is rarely recognized". This certainly is true; furthermore, I'm quite certain that the work of most School Community Councils goes unrecognized and is under-valued. The raising of over $22,000 by the Carlyle Council to support school needs is indeed a significant accomplishment.

The School Councils are required in every school and have specific powers and duties. Their key mandate is to work with parents and community to facilitate learning success and well-being of students. However, representation on the Councils is strictly voluntary and members put in many hours of their own time to support the youth in their school as well as the teachers and support staff in their community.

Fundraising by SCCs to support the placement of additional SMART boards in schools in Division 2 (Arcola, Carlyle, Manor, Maryfield and Wawota) as well as working to improve playgrounds, eliminate bullying, and the hosting of a myriad of other support activities illustrate the valuable work done by the members. Their work is so important in supporting the instructional program in schools, so invaluable in encouraging students to be the best they can, and so critical in fostering a positive climate in their schools.

These volunteers on the Councils believe in the talent, energy and potential of our kids. They deserve all the support and encouragement we can give them, and we sincerely thank them for their contributions and unending support for our school communities.

Harold Laich, Wawota

Board Member (Division 2)
