I didn't think it was possible, but my dad became "bacon'd out."
Over the last year he's posted numerous bacon recipes on social media and seems to add it to everything, even if it's not needed. When I was home a couple weeks ago he even decided to top some smoked ribs with a few pieces of bacon, just to finish them off.
So, being the good daughter I bought he and my mom tickets to the Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival held in Kipling last Saturday. It had grown immensely from last year and came with numerous different bacon infused dishes. Everything from bacon wrapped items, to chocolate dipped bacon, maple bacon fudge, bacon and egg ice cream, and much more.
We tasted this and that, and it was a good thing we didn't eat a large breakfast because we were soon full from all of the creations. Some were great, while others were maybe not quite right in my opinion; but, overall the 28 items were all very interesting.
Though he might have gotten a little "bacon'd out" for the day, it was fun taking my mom and him with me to work, especially to something that would put a giant smile on his face as my entire family seems to have turned out to be what people call foodies.
Not only was it entertaining to take them to the Bacon Festival, but it was nice to show my parents what I do. My mom has tagged along with me before, but not quite to the extent of last Saturday.
Though they missed out on the soccer and baseball in the morning on Saturday, they travelled with me up to Kipling then straight out to the trail ride happening out at Saskairie. We were then off for home as we were all full and feeling a little sleepy.
Though he used to be a farmer and now works as a tow truck driver, he's driven quite a few miles in his day and was surprised at how many I could put on in a day.
As we sat watching a movie, I went through photos, and my dad excitedly told me he had taken more than I did throughout the day. Though he may have, I can only choose so many to put into the paper and had only shown my parents, what I thought were, the better photos from the day I had taken.
Though I was a little stressed, trying to get everything done and entertain my parents, it turned out my job was entertaining enough as they took in the Bacon Festival and enjoyed themselves visiting with people at the trail ride camp.
I also made sure they took in quintessential Carlyle and area necessities including stopping in at King's sale in Memorial Hall and grabbing a coffee from Michael Ellis who was also there with his pop-up shop. We stopped at the drive-in and when my parents mentioned stopping at a bar I told them to take in the High House in Arcola, though I think it's actual name is Buddy's I've never met anyone who calls it that around Arcola. This was mostly because of the history of the building.
This weekend coming up is Father's Day and I only hope that last weekend's adventures were an adequate gift this year, which I think the smile on my Dad's face at the Bacon Festival made the added bit of stress over the weekend worth it.
