WEYBURN - Cover your fruits and veggies, turn on the furnace and bring out your hot chocolate and warm comforters. Fall is here, as temperatures start to dip lower every day.
Fall is typically a time to celebrate the end of harvest. It is also a time when the trees start to show signs of gold or crimson leaves, before shedding those leaves onto the ground below.
Migratory birds start to head south for the winter, and it won’t be long before we see the first snow of the season.
Prior to COVID-19 restrictions, many local organizations used this time of year to host Fall Suppers. It was a time of socializing, and sharing a meal with community members.
Perhaps we will see a few Fall Suppers return this year. There are already a few community events in the plans that I am excited about.
The Weyburn Youth Centre (WYC) will be hosting its annual fundraising banquet at Knox Hall on Saturday, October 1. This year the event brings additional excitement, as the non-profit organization will be celebrating 30 years of community service.
A full program is planned for the evening, including a turkey supper, a live and silent auction, and a presentation that will look back at the history of the Weyburn Youth Centre, which is also known as Tags.
The Flavours of Fall fundraiser for the Weyburn Agricultural Society will be held on Saturday, October 8 at Exhibition Hall. I encourage local residents to support the Flavours of Fall.
There are so many valuable events and programs organized by the Weyburn Agricultural Society, as they are an integral organization to Weyburn and southeast Saskatchewan through their support of 4-H.
Thanksgiving itself will be an opportunity for family or friends to gather together and celebrate the many things they are thankful for in their lives. The holiday is also a chance to meet over a meal, celebrating the end of harvest. I look forward to the turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie that traditionally is served during Thanksgiving.
Finally, one of my favourite events of the year is currently in the planning stage. The Communithon will be held at the Weyburn Royal Canadian Legion on Friday, October 28. The theme is ‘Fall in Love with Communithon’ this year, which is a nice way to incorporate the season into the annual event.
